Potato Podimas Recipe | Brahmin-Style Podimas | No-onion,No-garlic Recipe

This is a very easy side-dish prepared with mashed potato flavoured with a mild south-Indian seasoning. Despite its simplicity, it holds a special place in any traditional feast menu. Being a no-onion, no-garlic Satvik recipe, it is also suitable for everyday cooking, especially on auspicious vrat days. I always do Podimas with Plantain / Vazhaikkai as I had thought kids like potato in the form of spicy curry more than anything else. But, to my surprise, when I did this Podimas, they loved it equally. As it can be done in less than 5mins if we have boiled potato handy (which I usually pressure cook with rice), this is a fuss-free recipe for busy mornings as well.

Preparation time - 5mins
Cooking time - 25mins (including pressure cooking of Potato)

Theme - South Indian Meal Dishes

Ingredients:-

Potato - 3
Coconut oil - 1tblsp
Mustard seeds - 1tsp
Urd dal - 1tsp
Ginger - 1/2" piece, grated
Green chilli - 2, chopped finely
Curry leaves - A sprig
Salt - As needed
Turmeric powder - 1/2tsp
Grated coconut - 2-3tblsp
Asafoetida - 1/4tsp
Lemon juice - A squeeze

Method:-

1.  Boil potatoes in a pressure cooker for 3 whistles. Peel and crumble gently. DO NOT mash it completely.

2. Heat oil in a pan, temper it with mustard and urad dal. Once it turns golden, add ginger, chilli, curry leaves, salt and turmeric powder and sauté for 5-6secs.

3.  Add grated coconut and sauté for another 10secs. Add the mashed potato and gently stir to coat evenly. Switch off the flame and squeeze in lemon juice.

Serve as a side for any rice varieties. Makes an excellent dry filling for chapathi roll for a packed meal for kids! Enjoy!
